The Agile Desktop
Francis Carden, CEO

OpenSpan, Inc.

Three of the hottest IT trends over the past couple of years have been SOA, BPM and virtualization. Each shows tremendous promise for delivering real measurable impact to an enterprise's bottom line. But each also comes with a set of challenges for the ultimate consumers of these technologies, business users. Just as telecommunications and cable companies were forced to address the "last mile" of connectivity into users' homes; so too must we address the "last mile" for SOA, BPM and virtualization. How these technologies impact, positively or negatively, user's desktops and their ability to perform their jobs will ultimately determine the success of these technologies. The purpose of this article is to introduce some of these challenges that you may not have yet considered, suggest a possible solution and outline the interaction between desktops and these technologies actually creates new opportunities to create the agile desktop.

ELC Technologies Releases ELC Core Rails Library to Reduce Development Time and Costs for Enterprise Applications

ELC Technologies, a global Ruby on Rails software development firm, has unveiled ELC Core, a comprehensive software library and toolset that provides a robust, extensible framework for next-generation Web and enterprise application development. The ELC Core library draws from hundreds of custom software applications created by the ELC Technologies development team for Global 2000 companies. Each of the software building blocks included in the ELC Core library is the result of field-proven software developed using Ruby on Rails, Java and other leading platforms, and tested using ELC’s software development practices.

The ELC Core library consists of individual software components that can be assembled to create different types of extensible, next-generation enterprise and social networking applications. These components enable different types of Web and enterprise functions, such as account management and administration, e-commerce, multimedia, messaging, internationalization and localization, Web 2.0, social networking and workflow management. By assembling these code elements into a single toolset, ELC is offering customers an off-the-shelf application framework that dramatically reduces development time while creating an extensible application platform that is easy to build on and maintain.

Bungee Labs to Offer Federated Hosting for PaaS

Bungee Labs has announced federated hosting to expand adoption of Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) among enterprises and Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) providers. Organizations developing highly interactive applications on the Bungee Connect  PaaS can now elect to host those applications on self-managed infrastructure running the new Bungee Application Server, or on the multi-tenant Bungee Grid at datacenters in the US, Europe and on the Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud.

Organizations using Bungee Connect to develop and deploy applications can request that their application be hosted on the multi-tenant Bungee Grid on Bungee-managed servers in the US, Europe and Amazon EC2. Beginning in June, organizations will be able to self-designate the hosting location from within their online Bungee Connect development and management account.

As a live, interactive example, Bungee Labs has deployed the WideLens  reference application on the Bungee Grid at Amazon EC2. WideLens is a free personal calendaring application demonstrating the interactivity and integration capabilities of the Bungee Connect PaaS, WideLens includes connectivity with Google Calendar, Microsoft Exchange, iCalendar feeds, Facebook and Salesforce.com.

Beginning in June, organizations will be able to self-designate the hosting location for their Bungee-powered applications from within their online Bungee Connect development and management account. Additionally, organizations participating in the Bungee Connect Early Adopter Program will have the ability to download the Bungee Application Server containing a complete, single instance of the Bungee Run-time Software for hosting their Bungee-powered applications within their own infrastructure. These VMware-based software appliances operate as a single, complete management and delivery server, and as a management hub for additional Bungee Application Servers when multi-server scalability is required.
